Art

Intention

At Ackton Pastures Primary Academy we believe that art forms an important part of the curriculum. We think it is important to incorporate art as a whole into other areas of the curriculum as well as being a stand-alone subject. Pupils are given the opportunity to express themselves creatively, directly through Art and Design. This gives children the opportunity to develop their creativity, both individually and collectively and that’s why our aim is for every child and young person in our school to have the opportunity to experience the richness of arts.

Implementation

Children are taught a range of skills through a balanced and diverse 2 year rolling programme. These units of work are usually linked to the topic theme for the term.

In readiness for KS1, children in Early Years have the opportunity to express themselves in a creative environment. Children are taught the basic skills of mixing, experimenting with colour and creating simple representations of people and objects.

In Key Stage One, children are taught to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination. Children explore a range of artists and are encouraged to describe a range of similarities and differences between these. Art is taught through themes linked to topic work an links are made to the topic theme as far as possible.

In Key Stage Two, children are given the opportunity to develop techniques taught in KS1 in order to improve their mastery of each art skill. Children again explore a range of great artists in history.

Impact

At the end of each unit of work, skills are assessed by the teacher against the planned objectives. Evidence of the skills are shown in children’s sketch books and topic files. Throughout the unit, children are also given lots of opportunities to self and peer assess their work. The art subject leader monitors outcomes on a termly basis and gives constructive feedback to other members of staff.
